Home-ownership sucks, anyone can tell you that. Broken pipes, maintenance, fires, possible structural issues, etc.
But, there are a few things you can usually count on.
1) You don’t have to tether your house in place
2) You don’t live out an earthquake drill every time it’s windy
3) You don’t have to worry about falling in water when you leave your front door.
This person told me about their neighbour’s house’s moorings breaking and drifting away during a recent storm. My house never does that, because I live on the land.

If I’m gonna live on the water, it’s gonna be on a powered goddamn yacht.

But the Dutch have made an art out of it.
You can either be tethered or attached to a post and you slide up and down it as the water level changes.
Then there’s ones on posts that when the water level gets too high, the house rises off the posts.

yeah there are a few designs so they even look like a regular house when it isn’t flooding.

I’ve always kind of liked the vintage Rockwell/Whitcraft boats that were kind of a hybrid between a houseboat and a cabin cruiser.

I feel like living on the water makes more sense in the Netherlands, the whole country is basically a shallow bay with a narrow band of the surrounding coastline. There is plenty of land in the US and Canada where it's just not necessary.. (that said, the problems identified here would be remedied by adopting Dutch building standards, unsurprisingly since they've been working on such problems for several centuries..)

Will it still float if you park your car in the living room?

That particular house is located on a car free island in the River Thames...but yes, yes it would.

I’ve had cause in the past to spend the night on basic wharves of a very similar design. I didn’t even roll out of my swag...
The only foreseeable downside? Crocodiles.

Houses are expensive to maintain. Boats are expensive to maintain. Houseboats are a goddamn maintenance nightmare.

Like hurricane roof straps, it’ s criminal that building codes haven’t been changed. Its like the florida coastline, how many times does it have to be hit till concrete homes, 10 ft+ above sea level are required.

40-50 years ago, they were exceptionally cheap homes in generally undesirable areas in places with cheap housing. They were built pretty mediocre as a result. Now they’re old, but expensive, and you need to spend money to maintain them (which you’d have if they were cheap) much like living on a boat, but it’s a cheap/shitty boat.
I could see it being entertaining if it was still cheap.

yeah - agree, not really my jam. Lots of money for a house with no property to build a big garage to put all the cars I’m going to buy. But we have a bunch of them down here...

While I can admire the idea of living on one, as someone who owns both a house and a boat I can’t fathom the idea of actually choosing to willingly combine the problems and upkeep of both into one thing and then plan to actually live on it. I do love falling asleep on the water, though.

Actually I would love one in Sausalito. But then I still don’t have a garage.

The property development lobby is very strong, and actively donates to politicians. Does that answer your question about how long?
